The question of what exactly makes a Martial Artist an “artist” is something that has crossed my mind more than a few times over the years.
I don’t know that I can really call myself a “martial artist” but I have been something of a “martial craftsman.”
But I think I’ve come to a good understanding of what the difference between a craftsman and a true artist is:
A craftsman is someone who practices a skill or set of skills to a high degree of proficiency.
An artist is a craftsman who adds to their art based on their own experience and creativity.
Looking at being a systems admin, I’ve been wondering what it is that separates a senior systems admin from those below them on the ladder and I think it’s the flexibility of thought.
Where I’m at right now, I spend a lot of time looking up solutions online and if nothing presents itself, I tend to get stuck. I think the real mark of progression is going to be when I understand things well enough in a general sense that I formulate solutions to things that I share to solve other people’s problems.
